Local Ocean Conservation (LOC) is a grassroots marine conservation project, based in Watamu, Kenya. LOC uses sea turtles as a flagship indicator species to measure, improve and protect ocean and coastal health.
LOC’s programs include Bycatch Rescue and Release, Nest monitoring and Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (all under the Watamu Turtle Watch program), Community Awareness program and Data and Research.
Over 25 years, LOC has implemented over 22,100 rescues, rehabilitated and released over 700 sea turtles, and monitored over 1100 nests.
Working closely with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Beach Management Units (BMUs) and local fisher and women’s groups, the LOC team seek to bring about behavioral changes at the community level that result in people protecting marine turtles and ocean habitats, based on their own social, economic, and cultural interests and values.
